About

Niranjana R

I’m a journalist turned urban geographer interested in the everyday lives of cities, especially as they are worked out around water and other natures. My academic focus has been on the city of Chennai and its many waterways.

I’ve spent the last three years studying Chennai’s coastal ecologies as a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE); and am currently a Lecturer in Geography at Queen Mary University of London.  I completed my PhD in Human Geography at University College London (UCL) in 2018 and then worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the ERC-funded ‘Rethinking Urban Nature’ project at the University of Cambridge.

Before this, I worked as a reporter for daily newspapers in Chennai and Bengaluru writing stories about urbanisation.
